Last Friday the Halifax Art Society enjoyed a workshop at All Saints Parish Church Hall at Skircoat Green in Halifax. Members could use materials provided as part of the workshop.
On the 13th September ‘Visionary Drawing with Edward Fos’ will surely attract a lot of members from 10:30am to 1pm.
At the Friday morning session many members of the Halifax Art Society watched Matthew Evans produce three pastel seascapes with detailed and funny comments.
We learned that paper has to have sufficient ‘tooth’ to take the pastel. Watercolour paper will work, but different grades and colours of abrasive paper will produce more vibrant colours.You can even use a brush with a bit of water to highlight some areas.
On Friday 6th September, from 10:30 to 1 pm, the topic will be ‘Bees, butterflies and bugs’, when Lynda Thomas will lead a lino printing session.
On Friday 16th August, many members of the Halifax Art Society met again at ‘All Saints Hall’ on Skircoat Green and learned a lot in a ‘Perspective Workshop’ with Philip Hickin.
We were puzzled seeing an engraving by William Hogarth titled ‘Satire on False Perspective’ containing 22 errors but were told that it was deliberately produced that way in the 18th century.
In the second half of the morning we used our rulers and pencils following Philip’s instructions to create a road with lots of street lights all in perspective.
The Halifax Art Society had an alternative program last Friday during the refurbishment of our usual venue.
One group of HAS members had a successful session down the allotment of Ilona. It was a good turnout, a lot of fun and the main thing: it stayed dry! Another group went to the house of members to create beautiful lettering.
Last week HAS member Janet Gledhill led the session ‘Figures on a beach’. She gave very useful advice, displayed a vast collection of beach photos and magazines and even had thought of tracing paper. So we all worked hard and enjoyed the morning thoroughly.
From the 26th July to 9th August there will be an alternative programme, as All Saints Parish Hall will undergo some renovations. On the 26.7. we will meet at the usual time 10:30 – 1 pm, but at the Skircoat Green Allotments for Outdoor Sketching.
