Dominic VINCE – Lecture on The Yellow House – Van Gogh & Gauguin

12th June 2026 – Dominic gave another wonderful talk, this time on the relationship between Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin at the Yellow House in Arles, where they spent 9 weeks creating artwork that influenced each other’s styles, pushing each of them toward an expressive, symbolic use of colour. He talked about Gauguin’s ambition to set up his own painting community and Van Gogh’s hope to create a place where artists could live cheaply and support one another. But tensions quickly surfaced. Van Gogh, with his intense personality and passionate work ethic, clashed with Gauguin’s more independent and sometimes dismissive attitude. Their collaboration resulted in masterpieces but ended abruptly following Van Gogh’s mental breakdown and famous mutilation of his ear.
