Last Friday we had our first long awaited demonstration after the lockdown. John Harrison, known to many from TV, entertained and taught us ‘Line and Wash’ using a very fine black pen and watercolour. He created a stunning view of nearby Slaithwaite.

Workshop with Dorothy Simister
Halifax Art Society members had a very interesting time at a workshop run by visiting artist, Dorothy Simister, on Friday, 25th February. We had to work very quickly to do a series of watercolour sketches from photographs that Dorothy had taken on her travels around the UK and Europe – she only allowed us a few minutes for each sketch before changing the picture! Dorothy brought a big pile of her own sketchbooks to look at. She never travels without her sketchbook and paints!
The One Show
Lynne Hickin’s illustrations will be featured on The One Show, with broadcast scheduled for Tuesday 1st March 2022 although it may be overtaken by larger news stories and postponed. UPDATE – Postponed to Friday 11th March.
The human interest story concentrates on Brian Abram’s accident and the woman who saved his life, but he will talk about his books and some of Lynne’s illustrations will appear on screen.
It is hoped the show will stimulate sales of the books about ‘Grandad Wheels’ and take the money raised for charity over £30,000 – it’s currently standing at £29,000!

Colour mixing workshop
On Friday 18th February, art society member Jenny Reid introduced us to the skill of colour mixing with watercolour paint. The emerging pieces of work proved the patience and skill of our members once again.
Abstract landscape
On Friday 11th February, our secretary Janet Gladhill guided us through a very interesting morning. She provided paintings in a variety of mediums for us to choose from, along with books on the subject to help with different mixed media ideas. Janet brought along some mark-making tools for us to try out: oil pastels, store cards, water spray bottles, cling film, bubble wrap, twigs, ink and pens, just to name a few. Once again all members enjoyed the morning.
