The immediacy of watercolour

Last Friday the Halifax Art Society watched their president Paul Talbot-Greaves give a demonstration of ‘The Immediacy of Watercolour’. Paul used negative painting again and again to create stunning effects. Two layers of watercolour had to dry before an even darker layer was applied with a light hand. In the end Paul used some white gouache sparingly to add fine details of glistening on his stunning picture of a farm in North Yorkshire.

Watch this space after Christmas to learn more news from the HAS. Merry Christmas!

Illustrated talk by Tom Ratcliffe

Last Friday the Halifax Art Society invited Tom Ratcliffe to give an illustrated  talk about John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893) to our members. We learned about other artists whose pictures seem to have influenced Grimshaw too, for instance American artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Some of Grimshaw’s work can be found at The Smith Art Gallery in Brighouse.

On the 6th December our president Paul Talbot-Greaves will demonstrate The Immidiency of Watercolour in a landscape painting.

In to focus

Last Friday the Halifax Art Society’s session was led by Lynne Hickin focusing on the drawing of the eye. Lynne talked us through the various stages and components that make up our eyes and helped us to see the subject a little clearer! There was also plenty of  opportunity to paint and draw with our favoured paint medium.

On the 29th November there will be a working session inspired by Grimshaw.
