On the 29th June, the Halifax Art Society put into practice all we had learned previously from William Gall. Not everybody had to buy acrylic paint as the society was providing them and palette knives too. We enjoyed the morning as usual, not only the artistic work, but also the social side of it.
The Friday meeting of the Halifax Art Society welcomed Mr William Gall as their demonstrator on the 22nd June. His remarkable skill is his use of acrylic paint.
He chose as his subject a woodland scene and worked on a larger than portrait style canvas, which was already prepared with white acrylic. After roughly drawing in trees, he used a pallet knife to cover them with white acrylic and made branch like scratches with the knife. As he worked he gave us lots of advice and his use of a very limited pallet produced some amazing colours.
His finished painting was inspirational and we all admired it greatly. We shall put into practice all that he has taught us at our next meeting.
On the 6th of July Sue Smith will demonstrate ‘Animal Portrait in Pastels’.
Members of the Society had to concentrate very hard last Friday when Chris Leaper was our very patient tutor!
Using a ruler, compass and a pencil, we began to make an Islamic geometric pattern. Chris was also the first person to try out our new projection equipment.
The Halifax Art Society had John Harrison as their Friday meeting demonstrator on the 25th May. Most of the members had been to one of John’s demonstrations before and looked forward to meeting him again.
As usual John had lots of interesting art stories to tell as he painted his chosen subject: ‘Appletreewick in Line and Wash’. John, a very skilled draughtsman, drew in two houses on the opposite sides of a small street. He then proceeded to add limited colour, concentrating on the shade that the houses made. The finished painting was admired by all members, and we look forward to putting into practice all he had taught us at our next meeting.
On the 8th June Chris Leaper is scheduled for ‘Demonstration & Workshop creating Islamic Geometric Patterns’.

Last year members of the Halifax Art Society went to Liverpool to see the ‘John Piper Exhibition’. We were so impressed that last week we tried to create coastal scenes and more ‘in the style of‘, guided by Lynda Thomas and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
On the 25th, John Harrison will demonstrate ‘In Line and Wash’.
