Halifax Art Society had a very unusual session on Friday 27th July – painting pebbles to hide for others to find! Inspired by the Calderdale Rocks group, we painted some of our favourite artworks onto pebbles in acrylic, and then varnished them. Good fun was had by all and we expect our pebbles to be turning up all around Calderdale very soon!
‘Drawing with Dust’ was the title of the Halifax Art Society’s workshop on Friday 20th July 2018, led by talented member, Carol Pope. This was a fascinating technique – you rub powdered graphite onto your paper, and use a putty rubber to get the highlights!
Halifax Art Society members had a very interesting working session on Friday 13th July – a lucky day, indeed – as some lovely results were achieved using pastel techniques demonstrated by Sue Smith the previous week.
Last Friday, 23 of our members came in spite of the heat to enjoy Sue Smith’s demonstration ‘Animal Portrait in Pastels’.
We watched in wonder as a dog’s portrait emerged from the black ‘Wet&Dry Sanding Paper’ which Sue prefers. She used hard pastels first for the dark tones, then changed to soft pastels and later to pastel pencils. To give texture she drew tiny strokes in the direction the fur grows. The dog appeared in amazing depth.
Next session we will try working in pastels ourselves.
On the 29th June, the Halifax Art Society put into practice all we had learned previously from William Gall. Not everybody had to buy acrylic paint as the society was providing them and palette knives too. We enjoyed the morning as usual, not only the artistic work, but also the social side of it.
