Grandad Wheels talk

Last Friday a lot of members came to listen to our guest speaker Brian Abram. He gave a very interesting and moving illustrated talk on how he came to write 6 books in the series ‘Grandad Wheels’. Brian goes to many primary schools reading out of his books and talking to the children, thus breaking down prejudices about people in wheelchairs.

Many of us had seen him recently on TV on the One Show or read about him at the website www.grandadwheels.com

After the break, with cake baked by our member Jenny, Lynne Hickin explained in fascinating details how she went about illustrating the books.

The books are being sold for £6.90. All proceeds go to two charities that offer support to people who have suffered a spinal injury – the ‘Spinal Injuries Association ‘and ‘Back Up’.

The One Show

Lynne Hickin’s illustrations will be featured on The One Show, with broadcast scheduled for Tuesday 1st March 2022 although it may be overtaken by larger news stories and postponed. UPDATE – Postponed to Friday 11th March.

The human interest story concentrates on Brian Abram’s accident and the woman who saved his life, but he will talk about his books and some of Lynne’s illustrations will appear on screen.

It is hoped the show will stimulate sales of the books about ‘Grandad Wheels’ and take the money raised for charity over £30,000 – it’s currently standing at £29,000!

Lynne’s adventure

Our very own Lynne Hickin shared the spotlight at the launch of author Brian Abram’s new book Charlie’s Big Idea earlier this month.

Lynne has illustrated Mr Abram’s self published book in the series of The Adventures of Grandad Wheels, turning her skills to digital art from her usual oils, acrylics and pastels. Lynne is an active member of the Halifax Art Society and often leads workshops and talks for our other members.

It’s an impressive piece of work… I appreciated that Grandad was normal, and not the whiskered dotard that I would have been tempted to draw. Congratulations to Lynne Hickin.

The book launch took place at the office of Irwin Mitchell solicitors in Leeds and they even had Lynne’s illustrations added to the cupcakes for the event.

After being left paralysed in a cycling accident, Mr Abrams turned to writing to entertain his grandson and help him understand what it is like to use a wheelchair. Sales of the books will benefit two spinal injury charities: Back Up, and the Spinal Injuries Association.

Alice through the Illustrators

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was the subject for the Halifax Art Society last Friday. Lynne Hickin gave an illustrated talk entitled ‘Alice through the Illustrators’ and we looked at many of the artists who have added their illustrations to the story.

Originally published in 1865, the story has never been out of print. John Tenniel was responsible for the original illustrations and many other artists have given their visions of Alice as soon as copyrights allowed it, including Salvador Dali, Ralph Steadman and Robert Ingpen.

As Lynne was using a microphone everybody of the large audience could follow easily. We all found our favourite among all the different copies Lynne had brought along.

On the 23rd we are going to learn from Lynne how to develop an illustration.
