Trees in Oils

On Friday 25 January, the Halifax Art Society enjoyed David Starley’s demonstration of ‘Trees in Oils’. For many it was the first experience with this medium.

It was fascinating to watch David starting with a blank canvas and with one of his own photographs of a wood as inspiration. We learned how to give it the first grounding and to work with different forms and sizes of painting knives. As David stressed, it’s difficult to complete an oil painting in two hours, but we all thought he did a pretty good job.

On the 8th February Matthew Evans will lead a workshop on ‘Roller Painting’ and we were asked to bring an apron. So another new experience is waiting.

Winter scene in Watercolour

Our president Paul Talbot-Greaves, associate of the British Watercolour Society, gave a demonstration ‘Winter scene in Watercolour’ on the morning of the 11th of January.

More than 30 people had come to All Saints Parish Hall on Godfrey Road in Skircoat Green to watch and listen. Everyone enjoyed a good experience thanks to our microphone and cameras, giving a good view. Beforehand Paul had drawn in pencil the snowy scene he had photographed in Calderdale. Then he developed his amazing picture in watercolour with interesting comments.

On the 25th January David Starkey will give a ‘Demonstration of Trees in Oils’.

Stopping by the Woods

The Halifax Art Society met last Friday for their first session in 2019 at All Saints Parish Hall in Godfrey Road, Skircoat Green at their usual time of 10:30 am.

Janet Gledhill started the session by reading out a poem of her choice ‘Stopping by Woods on a snowy Evening’ by Robert Frost. Members took that as an inspiration for their work.

At break we celebrated the beginning of 2019 by having cake instead of the usual biscuits.

On the 25th January David Starley will give a demonstration of ‘Trees in Oil’.

A Christmas Wreath

‘A Christmas Wreath’ was the subject of last Friday’s watercolour demonstration by Jane Austin for the Halifax Art Society. Jane gave many hints and tips on how to obtain different effects including using gold leaf.

It was a good turnout of members for this last session in 2018. At break time we enjoyed Christmas cake and cheese.

A Merry Christmas to all our members and friends, who will remember to join us again on the 4th January at All Saints Parish Hall in Skircoat Green , when Janet Gledhill will lead a morning of ‘Poetry and Cake’.
