Aboriginal Dot Painting

Last Friday members of the Halifax Art Society learned about Aboriginal Dot Painting from Lynda Thomas. This was new to most of us. It is only known in literature for a few decades, as the knowledge was passed on orally, in body painting or in displays on sand etc.

We enjoyed applying dots of acrylic paint on black paper, being intrigued by the possibilities of printing with the end of pencils, screws etc. until the paint faded more and more.

On the 14th February there will be a ‘Quick Draw Workshop’ with watercolours and water based black pens.

The painter of sunflowers

Paul Gauguin titled his portrait of Vincent van Gogh “The Painter of Sunflowers” and it took very little time for members to guess the subject of last Friday’s illustrated talk.

The talk was extremely well researched and presented by Lynne Hickin. None of us knew that one of van Gogh’s paintings was actually lost in a bombing, but luckily photographed just before that disaster.

We always meet at ‘All Saints Parish Hall’, Godfrey Road, Skircoat Green from 10:30am to 1pm on Fridays.

Landscape workshop

Friday’s meeting of the Halifax Art Society was a ‘follow up’ of the previous week’s acrylic demonstration by Paul Talbot-Greaves. Some of the members were new to the use of acrylic and the advice that Paul had offered us was very useful. Some members preferred to do a landscape in their favourite medium. At the end of the meeting there were many pleasing paintings for the members to be proud of.

On the 9th February there will be a ‘Talk & Workshop’ titled ‘Mudlarking and Assemblages’.
